Bridging Generations

Lessons from Black History to Empower Today’s Youth explores how the courage, resilience, and achievements of Black leaders throughout history provide powerful guidance for supporting and uplifting today’s young people. By reflecting on the legacy of figures like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Jean Augustine, Viola Desmond, and Lincoln Alexander, the keynote emphasizes that each generation has a responsibility to invest in the next. The message highlights the importance of mentorship, community partnerships, such as the meaningful collaboration between Playmas Montreal’s GemStar Circle of Excellence and the Lakeshore Kiwanis Club.

Gemma is a trailblazer in community leadership, cultural advocacy, and youth empowerment. Recognized in 1997 by the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award as “a woman who, by her daily actions, strength of character and professional path, enriches the community and contributes to the advancement of all women,” Gemma continues to inspire generations. She is also a proud recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and numerous other honors celebrating her lifelong dedication to service.

A graduate of McGill University and a native of Grenada, Gemma migrated to Canada in 1964 and has since become a pillar in Montreal’s cultural and community landscape. She is the founder and president of Playmas Montreal Cultural Association and the visionary behind the GemStar Circle of Excellence Scholarship and Mentorship Program, which supports the growth and success of youth. In addition, she is a founding member of the Spice Island Cultural Day Association of Quebec, created to strengthen and celebrate Grenadian heritage both locally and abroad.  Professionally, Gemma enjoyed a distinguished 35-year career as a Senior Auditor at BMO Bank of Montreal before retiring. Alongside her professional achievements, she has dedicated decades to business, community development, and charitable initiatives.  Gemma sits on several Boards including the National organization, United Against Hate Canada.

Gemma shares her life with her husband, Bernard Baynes, a retired schoolteacher. They are proud parents of their son Kevin, a Financial Planner at BMO Bank of Montreal, and loving grandparents to Axel.
